Steven R. Gursky

Steven Gursky helps companies, from startups to public, build and protect their valuable brands, structures and negotiates real estate deals, and enforces their intellectual property rights.

He handles corporate and contract issues, transactions of all sizes and jurisdictional complexities, real estate matters, and intellectual property for U.S., international and public corporations. Clients in the fashion and retail industry and other sectors rely on his long record of success in helping protect their brands and copyright and trademark portfolios, and his deep knowledge and experience in resolving anti-counterfeiting issues. Steve has successfully represented household brands in high-stakes trademark infringement and counterfeiting litigation against some of the largest corporations in America, including Walmart, Costco, and other prominent national companies.

His exceptional real estate experience includes retail store leasing and garage transactions. He handled the real estate and IP aspects of the Perry Ellis International sale, which was awardedDeal of the Year and “Activist Campaign of the Year by The Deal, and the IP aspects in the Kaufman Astoria Studios sale later named M&A Advisor’s Private Equity “Deal of the Year.” Recently, he has managed all details of multiple new leases for market expansion of famed restaurant and marketplace Eataly to numerous U.S. locations.

A sought-after authority on anti-counterfeiting and other issues, Steve has been quoted in leading publications, including The Wall Street Journal and Women’s Wear Daily. He has appeared on national and local news broadcasts, including a “60 Minutes” segment dedicated to anti-counterfeiting.

Steve is a former member of the board of directors of the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition (IACC) and served for many years on the board of directors of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. He also is an active dedicated mentor to students at his alma maters, Brooklyn Law School and Brooklyn College.

He is also the former chair of Olshan’s Intellectual Property Department and a former co-administrative partner of Olshan.

  • Represented George Feldenkreis, founder and former executive chairman of Perry Ellis International, Inc., regarding the intellectual property and real estate aspects of the acquisition of Perry Ellis.
  • Represented Eataly, the famed restaurant/marketplace regarding its leases in Century City, Boston, Dallas, Silicon Valley, and the World Trade Center.
  • Represented Marimekko, a noted Finnish design company, in its copyright infringement cases against a number of infringers.
  • Represented the owners of properties near the Javits Center in the ground leasing of those properties.
  • Represented Enterprise Parking Group in negotiating garage and parking lot leases and acquisition of fee interests and condominium garages.
  • Negotiated and completed a lease for The North Face for a flagship store on Fifth Avenue.
  • Represented noted U.K. steakhouse Hawksmoor in negotiating its U.S. restaurant leases in New York and Chicago.
  • Represented Luke’s Lobster in negotiating various store leases around the U.S.
  • Represented Manhattan Parking Group in negotiating leases and management agreements.
  • Represented Brandy Melville regarding store leases around the U.S.
