Sometimes, succession planning can fall apart gradually, or it can happen suddenly, in dramatic fashion. “The firm could blow up,” Nina said. “We've seen that, or we’ve seen mergers not be as profitable as they can be for the partners who decide to be part of the combination.” Nina emphasized the value of providing consistently superior service to clients. “If it’s being done correctly,” she said, “the client should not feel that there’s been a shift, because by the time the shift happens, the person who’s going to continue to be responsible for the work has done so for a good enough amount of time before any succession has happened.” Nina further notes that retaining top talent is crucial and starts with mentorship.
