Scott Shaffer Represents Boxer Krzysztof Glowacki in Arbitration Victory

Firm News

ESPN and Law.com (subscription required) reported that the World Boxing Organization (WBO) ordered an immediate rematch for Olshan client Krzysztof Glowacki against current WBO cruiserweight (200-pound) champion, Mairis Briedis.  Glowacki, a Polish citizen, lost his world championship to Briedis under unfair circumstances in Briedis’ home nation of Latvia.  Glowacki appealed to the Latvian Professional Boxing Federation, but that went nowhere. He retained Olshan’s Scott Shaffer, who tried a different approach, instead appealing to the Puerto Rican-based WBO sanctioning body.  The strategy proved to be successful. After a briefing process and an in-person hearing before three arbitrators in Puerto Rico, Glowacki prevailed by a split decision, a 2-1 vote.  The WBO required Brieidis to either give Glowacki a rematch within four months or give up his world championship. In the event Briedis chooses the latter option, Glowacki will get to fight another contender for the vacant championship.  “I’m thrilled that Glowacki will get a world title shot in his very next fight rather than having to wait around and simply hope for the best,” said Shaffer, a partner in the Advertising, Marketing & Promotions Group who concentrates in Boxing and Sports Law. In this matter, Olshan served as counsel to Glowacki and Glowacki’s promoter, Knockout Poland.
