Privacy Law
There is no question that the collection, analysis, and use of personal data is very valuable for almost any businesses. Indeed, every business today collects at least some form of personal data directly from individuals. In fact, many businesses consider the personal data they have collected to be one of their most important assets.
Often, a company’s key to success is its access to and utilization of personal data. Data usage can range from incorporating “big data” to increase sales, to monetizing customer activities, to many facets in between. It is of critical importance that every business understands and complies with data security and privacy requirements, including domestic and international laws, as well as industry standards.
There are numerous and ever-changing laws governing the collection, storage, and use of personal data and the means and methods by which a business must notify individuals from whom personal data is collected. Failing to properly follow applicable laws can result in very heavy fines or other negative implications. There are currently over 100 countries in six continents that have enacted some form of privacy laws to protect individuals whose personal data is collected and used by a business. In addition, over 20 U.S. states have either enacted their own privacy laws or are in the process of doing so. To that end, one of the group’s attorneys is GDPR-certified, bringing an international perspective on privacy initiatives.
